A Dog? Why Not?!

So last June we closed on our first house and moved in at the end of July. It was an exciting process! Now that we had a house it only made sense to add another member to our family...a dog, of course! Now, I have never had a dog before (I know, I must have been deprived as a child) but David grew up with a dog and convinced me that our family could not be complete without one. :) So then we had to decide which type of dog to get. We had always heard how Labrador Retrievers make great family pets, are easily trainable, and are extremely loyal. Not to mention David really wanted a "protective" dog...i.e. a dog that would be large in size.

While we were visiting David's family in Waxahachie one day, we went to a local pet store where we heard there was a Labrador Retriever puppy for sale. We went and checked it out and found a sweet, 8 week old, little black lab puppy. She even had paperwork to prove she was a purebred Labrador Retriever. We took her out of the display case and observed her for a while. She was friendly and so cute! We wanted to take a little time to decide if we really did want to bring home a puppy...so we went and ate lunch and made our decision...and went back to the pet store later and brought her home that evening. We decided to name her Abby. :)

Abby was officially born July 7, 2007 and WOW has she grown over this past year!! Thank goodness we have made it through the crate training and housebreaking stages! That was not fun. Not to mention the many vet visits to keep up with! All in all, she's worth it. :) Abby now weighs about 60 lbs and I think she will still grow a little more!! She is full of energy, but has really calmed down a lot from her super hyper days. She has also learned many commands...like sit, down, roll over, shake...and she's pretty good (finally) about actually listening to us. She has become very protective of her humans and is always so happy to be with us! Dogs definitely have an awesome loyalty and love for people that you just can't get from cats...at least not to that extent. I think Abby and Preston will become great friends. :)

Oh, your little Labbie is adorable! Our Carmen came to us as a mother, so we missed out on the puppy phase (which also has its own advantages...). But enjoy that dog, who will enjoy your baby, who will enjoy the dog, who will have a happy life, making you happy, etc. Black Labs rule! (We love Emily, by the way...)

What sweet animals you have! I too was told by my husband that a dog was necessary and our dog is great. He is about the same as as Abby so we know about all the energy! Barley is still like a puppy. Probably good prep for a baby in some ways though!
