On Friday (5/14/10) Aedan turned 6 weeks old which meant I had my 6 week postpartum checkup. The appointment went well...and I even took both Preston and Aedan with me. Aedan slept the entire time and Preston managed to stay out of too much trouble. :) The appointment was at 10am and by the time we got home I got Preston lunch and then put him down for a nap. Aedan had been unusually sleepy that day and didn't seem to be eating quite as much as usual. I didn't think too much about it until he also slept through Preston's entire 2 hour nap. I got Preston up and then picked up Aedan and he felt very warm. I took his temperature and it was 101.9! I called his doc's office right away and they got us in within the hour at 3:30pm. Luckily David got off of work at 2:30 that afternoon so I had him meet us at the doctor's office. Upon assessment his doctor didn't find much wrong, but because he had the fever they did a full septic workup. They got a urine culture by doing a straight cath (which they had to do twice--by the way--and got nothing and ended up doing a urine collection bag) and they did a spinal tap to rule out meningitis in the office. By then it was after hours so they sent us over to the hospital to get a chest xray and more lab work for blood cultures. The lab work was done last and they had to stick poor Aedan about 4 times before they called up the NICU nurses to do an arterial stick to get the blood they needed. :( Needless to say Aedan was cranky and Preston was beyond tired and hungry and ready to go. After all that we went back to the office to see the initial results of some of the tests to decide if he needed to be hospitalized or not. We got back there at about 6:30pm and the initial results were negative on everything except the chest xray. The chest xray showed some "haziness" in the right lower lung field with "possible" pneumonia to be ruled out. His doc didn't really like that report so he decided to give Aedan a shot of antibiotics to be on the safe side. After the shot we had to wait for about 20 minutes to make sure he didn't get an allergic reaction. It was a long afternoon and evening! He didn't have an allergic reaction to the antibiotics so we finally left the office with instructions to watch him overnight, give specific doses of acetaminophen for the fever, call if there were any concerns, and come back the next morning to see the doc covering that weekend for another checkup. The night went by ok...Aedan actually slept a lot...but I really didn't! Saturday morning we go in and he still has a temp of 101.4 even after giving him acetaminophen at regular intervals. Aedan's assessment was still pretty negative and no bacteria had grown from his cultures. The doc on call decided that since he's so young that we needed to come back again on Sunday morning for a checkup and he would decide if he should put him on antibiotics or not. Anyway, so Saturday night Aedan didn't sleep very well (which is more his normalcy) and we went back to the office Sunday morning. Aedan had been fever free since sometime Saturday night (yay!) and the doc checks him out again and thinks it's "just a virus" and tells us to call if he develops a fever again. I really hate that he has been sick! It's so sad when they are that little. :( So, fast forward to today and Aedan's doc calls me and wants to put him on antibiotics because of that chest xray report and him being so young. His nurse said Dr. H would "sleep better at night" knowing all bases were covered. Better safe than sorry with a newborn...and I'm ok with that! In all reality it probably really is just a virus because Preston had some kind of bug at the beginning of last week and passed it on to Aedan. A little bug for Preston can turn into a bigger deal for Aedan...and I know that...but it was still so sad to have to put Aedan through all the poking and prodding. :( He seems to be on the mend now and is back to his fussy, poor sleeping self! :)
On a positive note...Aedan had his first real social smile on Sunday. :) It's so cute so see his goofy, open-mouthed smile! He also makes cooing noises and is becoming much more aware of everything going on around him. He's already growing so fast!
I will be going back to working 2 shifts a week at the hospital on June 1st. That's only 2 weeks away!! In some ways I look forward to a break away from the kiddos for a constant amount of time. I love being with them, but it's so hard to be around a demanding toddler and fussy baby all day, every day. Aedan isn't always really fussy, but he's definitely more so than Preston was.
As for Preston...he is really picking up more and more words and sometimes putting a couple of them together. He loves to run around outside and I think he is getting in his 2 year molars. He's been drooling a lot and chewing on his binky that he is still attached to. He is also being a VERY picky eater! I swear he could live on Nutragrain bars! He's been shreiking/screaming lately...I'm thinking due to his teething? I'm hoping so anyway...because I'm ready for that to end! He's so cute when he tries to help with Aedan to give him a binky or wrap the blanket around him. I also have to continue to watch him very close because of him wanting to help with Aedan. Preston also loves to do housework type stuff. It's very cute! He will wipe the tables off or random places on the floor with a paper towel or rag, try and sweep or mop the floors (even where there is carpet), and act like he's folding laundry (while he actually throws it on the floor). :)
Life is very busy lately...needless to say...so that's what's been going on around here!
Preston also wanted to join Aedan for tummy time :) I hate how when Preston finally does look at the camera...the flash is too bright and he closes his eyes!
Preston "helping" with the laundry :)
Aedan smiling! He looks a little crazy here, but I promise he was in the middle of a smile...it's so hard to catch on camera!

All the pics are so cute! Poor Aedan...all that medical drama. Give both boys hugs and kisses from their favorite aunt. ; )
I am so sorry Aedan was so sick. It sounds like he is getting better now. Especially if he is smiling at you! It is nice that Preston tries to be so helpful for you and with Aedan. Caden likes to go get the broom and sweep. You have to encourage all that helpfulness so it stays...Anyway...have a great week and try and catch up on your rest...Funny how it seems as mom's we are always trying to "catch up" on sleep.
